MAGICIAN OF THE YEAR

You want the perfect party, and you want it to be really
special. You've picked a theme, and now you want to arrange for entertainment
to match your plans. I'm going to address this with the assumption that you want
a magician, because that's the best choice OK, I'll admit to a little
bias here - at least I'm honest about it).
When you call Michael and arrange for him to appear
(a little more bias, but you get the idea), there are some things you need to know
so that your performer can give you the best experience for your money.
- Where will he be performing?
This might seem minor to you, but to the magician, it can determine what he
can and can't do. Are you in a home? A restaurant? A community room? It is
very important to the entertainer - actually, to any entertainer.
- Are there any special rules or restrictions?
Some magicians come with a menagerie, some might make some use of fire magic. Depending
on the venue, there may be rules against this. Don't surprise your magician. You might
lose part of what you paid for through no fault of his. On the other side of the coin,
he should ask you about this as well.
- Is the venue available for inspection?
Assuming you don't want him to perform within the next 48 hours, he is probably
going to ask if he can look at where he's going to be working. At the very least,
he's going to have questions about where he's going to be. Angles are important
to any performer, and he may have to make adjustments to give you your money's worth.
At the very least, he'll prefer not to have anyone behind him. When planning where
to place him, do keep this in mind.
- What Age Group(s) Will He Be Entertaining?
This is important to any performer. Do be realistic. If you're planning a party
for 2-4 year olds, they are really not going to appreciate magic that much. Your
performer may be able to add some bright colors and funny sounds for them - but
that would be what the kids are looking for. If he's performing for teenagers, he'll
probably tweak what he's doing for the teen audience. This can be important for you.
Note: Michael's act is always family friendly. This is one worry you can
forget when using him.
- How Many People Will Be There?
Some effects play better before a small audience than a large one - and vice versa. Knowing
in advance the number that he will be entertaining will help him give you the best
show possible.
- How long do you want him to perform?
Be realistic about this. If you're wanting a show, about 30 - 45 minutes is going to be right.
If you're dealing with younger kids (under 10), about 30 minutes is right. The best magician
in the history of the world would lose his audience attention after the limits of attention
have passed. You want a strolling magician? You won't have the attention span problem - but
he will be entertaining each person a relatively short period of time (in other words, you need
to have other things for the guests to do). Talk to your magician about this. He'll help
give you some ideas.
At the time you call, don't be surprised if your magician (Michael <ahem>) asks these
and other questions. Your performer really does want to give you the best show possible.
